sorbet and song

Summer in its last days, and there is more than just a touch of chill in the air. Days are still toasty warm but the evenings demand a sweater and scarf. So the gingered plum and mint sorbet I made last night was the perfect seasonal crossover - the mint was still summery and fresh and the ginger gave it a touch of autumn warmth.

One of my many favourite songs is "Summer Skin" by Death Cab for Cutie, which is often on my play lists and by coincidence just started playing as I write this blog entry - it's really the most perfect description of the end of summer, both in lyrics and tone.

Squeaky swings and tall grass
the longest shadows ever cast
the water's warm and children swim
and we frolicked about in our summer skin

I don't recall a single care
just greenery and humid air
then Labour Day came and went
and we shed what was left of our summer skin

On the night you left I came over
and we peeled the freckles from our shoulders
our brand new coats so flushed and pink
and I knew your heart I couldn't win
cuz the seasons' change was the conduit
and we left our love and our summer skin
